This week for Friday Foodie I'm pleased to welcome Jackie Leigh Allen. Her salad looks scrumptious and I admit the addition of beef makes it something I'd like to try myself.
As a bonus, Jackie has offered to give away a FREE copy of NINA'S NICHE. Leave us a comment for your chance to win by drawing. (You can read a sample at that link. ;)
Here's Jackie telling you about her salad and why she included it in her story:
The three J's, Nina Jones, Carol James and Sherry Johnson, friends all through school eat this salad at a time when Sherry needs the support of her old pals. Nina Jones caught her bad boy in the first book of the Julian Treasures trilogy, NINA'S NICHE. Carol surrendered to the deputy sheriff in CAROL'S CHOICE. Sherry meets her match in SHERRY'S SUCCESS which will be out in November from Desert Breeze Publishing.
Green salad topped with rare beef strips.
4-5 cups mixed greens
3 oranges, sectioned
2 avocadoes, sliced
One pound beef, cooked rare and cut in strips
Arrange oranges, avocadoes and beef over greens. Makes 4 main dish servings.
Blue cheese vinaigrette
1/3 cup olive oil
1/3 cup vinegar
2 teaspoons snipped fresh basil
½ teaspoon paprika
Shake together then add ½ cup crumbled blue cheese.
Makes about one cup.
Excerpt from SHERRY'S SUCCESS:
Sherry took a roll then put it back. "I already had bread today at lunch." Then she remembered her lunch had been interrupted when she’d only eaten half her sandwich.
"That must have been some bread by the dreamy look on your face," Carol said.
Damn, I must be blushing, but those were some of the best kisses I ever had. It was fun, but it can’t go anywhere.
"I want me some of that bread," Nina said. "Give, tell us the story behind your look."
"I need energy for this tale." Sherry opened a roll and sniffed in the yeasty aroma. Stalling for time, she buttered the roll, took a bite, and lifted her spoon for another taste of soup.
"Tom and I had a picnic this noon. We were looking at the cupboards in Jake’s cabin."
"Ooh. I remember some very romantic times in Jake’s cabin," Nina said.
"We weren’t in the cabin long," Sherry said. "We had a picnic outside on a blanket."
"A picnic on a blanket under the trees. Now that sounds romantic," Carol said.
The waiter removed their empty soup bowls and placed salads in front of them. He put a plate with three bowls in the middle of the table. "We offer balsamic dressing, a blue cheese vinaigrette and a creamy horseradish."
"Now continue your story, Sherry," Nina said.
"This is a great salad," Carol said."Different kinds of lettuce, orange sections, avocado." She cut a piece of beef, added greens to her fork and smacked her lips. "Sharp cheese and savory meat. I wonder if they give out the recipe."
"We can ask," Nina said, "After Sherry finishes her story."
"Nothing much happened. We were outdoors after all."
Nina rolled her eyes. "You were two horny adults on a blanket with no one around."
"Horny?" Sherry put another bite of salad in her mouth.
"We know how we felt when we were without a man and a prime specimen came around," Carol added.
"Prime specimen?"I sound like an echo.
"What’s missing?" Now Carol did the eye roll. "Tom’s built, dependable, a darling daddy, what more could you want?"
Jackie Leigh Allen enjoys writing and is delighted to be published. AN OFFICER AND A GIGOLO piqued the attention of Desert Breeze Publishing and debuted in April 2011. NINA'S NICHE, the first book of a trilogy based in the mountain town of Julian, California, came out in November 2011 followed by CAROL'S CHOICE in May 2012. WIN'S WAR, the story of a Marine Lieutenant returning from Afghanistan without his legs was out in June 2012. SHERRY'S SUCCESS, THE THIRD BOOK in the Julian Treasures trilogy will be out in November. Later in the year AREAL MAN will come out from Boroughs Publishing Group as part of the New Year's Eve Club, five novellas about five women looking for the right man with a New Year's Eve deadline to find him.
